When did you last allow yourself to become entirely immersed in silence?
We live in a busy world with constant noise: traffic noise, planes and machinery, social media, TV, radio and the external demands to watch and follow content. Let’s not forget the psychic noise accompanying the physical noise in shops, restaurants, bars and cafes, from watching sports and other public events and places. In fact, the list is endless.
When did you last allow yourself to become entirely immersed in silence?
As someone born sensitive and psychic, having a calm, clear mind has been a challenge. However, with practice, determination and creativity, it is now easy to bring my mind into a state of silence.
Silence is a Precious Gift
We have grown accustomed to noise, and sometimes, silence seems like an alien or at least futile experience. The latter is actually true. There is a deep richness within silence. Silence is the place from which everything originates. When we go into silence, we embrace love, wisdom, patience and tolerance. A silent mind can open to clarity of thought and easy understanding of direction and the way forward.
To stop and be still may lead to acknowledging and facing inner conflict.
The Japanese character for ‘busy’ directly translates as ‘to lose one’s heart or one’s centre.’
Knowing Silence
To know silence, you need self-awareness and the ability to clear your mental and emotional state.
Pause and take a breath
Is my mind busy when I wake up?
Does my mind race throughout the day?
Do I talk a lot all day?
Am I easily influenced by the noise around me?
Is being still and silent hard for me?
Can I keep my mind still at all?
The regular practice of being silent to develop a calm mind helps bring a new depth of experience to life. You find a place of complete calmness, an inner space where your body, energy and mind can unite in balance. From here peace is born.
Many of us are afraid to look deep inside at the chaos within. We tend to compensate with a habit of constant outside activity, chasing something often out of reach or someone else’s dream.
To stop and be still may lead to acknowledging and facing inner conflict.
The Japanese character for ‘busy’ directly translates as ‘to lose one’s heart or one’s centre.’
Silence allows you to discover what is permanent within and in your life. You begin to realise the true purpose of your existence and the purpose of peace, both internally and externally. Silent meditation brings you back into a state of balance that creates positive change.
Pause and take a breath
I love to stop my mind and be silent.
I step back and observe by being silent.
Silence helps my mind expand, so I can confidently move forward.
I love silence.
I make time each day to be silent.
Silence gives me peace of mind.
Practical Silence
Pause and take a breath
Candle Silence
When you light a candle and look into its fire, you witness the sun’s stored energy released before you.
Light a candle.
Sit comfortably on the floor or on a chair with the candle at about eye level.
Gaze at the candle flame for five minutes.
Maintain your focus on the candle.
Do your best not to let your mind wander.
Time Silence
Going into silence helps to experience time differently.
Find a watch or clock with a second hand.
Sit comfortably on the floor or on a chair.
Gaze at the second hand as it goes round for five minutes.
Do your best to maintain your focus.
Flower Silence
Silence helps you appreciate the cycle of life in a new way.
Find a beautiful flower.
Sit comfortably on a chair or on the floor.
Look carefully at every aspect and angle of the flower.
Focus on its colour and shape, explore all its curves and contours.
Gaze at the flower for five minutes.
Close your eyes and hold the image of the flower in your mind.
Observe how easy or hard it is to hold the image for one minute.
For each of the above exercises, it may help to repeat the word ‘silence’, ‘peace’, or ‘calm.’ Or you can choose your own word.
See how long you can keep your mind still in these exercises. You may find one of them works better for you.
Allow the Silence Drop the Monkey Mind
Happiness and peace are your natural state; being silent and remembering your peaceful inner nature makes sense.
When the mind is unchecked, it can be restless and confused. It can be like the classic monkey, leaping endlessly from one thought to another. As we know, these agitated thoughts can take us from heightened joy to depths of despair. Once we go down there, it is usually hard to rise back into joy. We become susceptible to negative thoughts and energies around us and transmit negativity. Like attracts like and all this has a knock-on effect.
Life’s most successful thoughts, feelings and ideas are born from a still point, a space of calmness and clarity.
Throughout my life, I have found that my choices and decisions from a state of silence always turn out to be the best.
Silence Brings a Calm, Clear Mind
Spending time in total silence regularly develops a calm mind that is never disturbed, no matter what happens. A clear mind allows you to accept and respond calmly to life’s experiences, rather than reacting to them. A calm, clear mind is not achieved by control alone. It has to come from a quiet mind that regularly rests in silence.
The great world spiritual teachers practice attaining a state of calmness created from silent contemplation. This state enables one to look deep within oneself and see the many layers of life and how they connect.
High Silence
In the Vedic teachings, the Hindu god Lord Mahadev Shiva is the Adiyogi, or the first yogi. In his dancing form as Shiva Nataraj, he is the Lord of the Cosmic Dance. He dances on death and all illusion, so that we may once again know truth.
Lord Shiva is the patron god of meditation and yogic arts. When you ask for his help, he will answer with a guiding light that takes you easily into silence.
In his active, fierce aspect, Shiva is known for slaying demons. Both your inner demons and lack of focus and your perceived external demons.
When you practice holding your mind in a silent space, or meditate in silence, you may use the following simple Shiva mantra to help you focus and stay in silence.
“Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namah Shivaya, Shivaya Om Namah”
Higher Silence Exercise
Pause and take a breath
You can recite the Shiva mantra or perform one of the previous exercises to silence your mind.
Bring your attention to your feet.
Exhale and imagine growing roots deep into the earth.
Inhale and draw light from the earth up through your roots, through your feet, all the way through your body and up through your crown.
A clear light from the universe flows down from above, through your crown, down through your body and out through your feet into the earth.
Bring your attention to your head.
The pure light from the universe creates a crystal clear lake in your mind.
Breathe and hold your awareness on the clear lake.
Stay here for as long as you can.
If you need an insight into a situation or a decision, ask the universe for a clear idea or answer.
Exercise Two For Day to Day Life
Regular practice of going into silence can bring the results into your daily life.
Practice the above exercise, but replace the crystal lake with a clear white screen.
Ask the universe to give you the answer you seek on the white screen.
In daily life, if you need an answer or solution to a question or situation, picture the clear white screen in your mind and ask the universe for guidance.
You can do this alone or with people around you.
When you regularly practice the art of being immersed in silence, you emerge each time like a beautiful, new, pure version of yourself, rising from a deep, calm, crystal clear mountain lake. Your mind will be free from agitation. You want to live in a world that is peaceful and accepting with no need for conflict, struggle or competition.
“Speak only if it improves upon the silence.” – Mahatma Gandhi
