We grow up learning how to do life the right way. Be kind. Work hard. Keep it together. Don’t make a fuss. Don’t upset anyone. And for the most part, we do it. We build the career, raise the kids, hold it all together, and keep showing up for everyone else. From the outside, it looks like success. You’ve ticked the boxes, achieved the goals, and created a life that was expected by society. But inside, there’s an instinct and an unsettling feeling that’s hard to ignore. A feeling that something is missing, even though you’ve done everything you were supposed to.
That’s the part no one talks about. The moment you realise you’ve built a life that looks good but doesn’t always feel good. It’s not because you’re ungrateful or unhappy. It’s because somewhere along the way, you started living inside an invisible cage.
Living Inside The Cage
This cage isn’t made of walls or steel. It’s made of beliefs and expectations that you’ve carried for years, sometimes generations. It’s the unspoken rules that have shaped how you move through the world: be grateful, don’t rock the boat, be happy with what you’ve got, and make sure everyone else is happy. You learn to tone yourself down, to stay in the shadows, to keep your voice small, and before you realise it, you’re trapped in your own set of limitations. Much like the frog in the pot, it happens quietly, in the background, while you’re busy doing everything for everyone else.
I know because I’ve lived there too. I said yes when I wanted to say no. I pushed through exhaustion because I thought that’s what strong women do. I over-delivered, overthought, and absolutely gave too much of myself. And by doing that, I slowly lost touch with what I actually wanted and what made me happy. That’s the thing about getting ourselves trapped in this invisible cage: you start to believe that playing small is safe, that pleasing everyone keeps the peace, all while your needs are not even on your radar. But eventually, something inside you starts to shift.
For many women, that moment comes around forty. You start to notice what no longer feels right or good. You stop caring so much about fitting in and start wondering what would happen if you just stopped doing all of the things you do. The same things that once felt comfortable begin to feel like they are weighing you down. You see the cracks forming, and once you see them, they can’t be unseen.
Breaking Free from The Cage
Freedom doesn’t arrive in one big, dramatic moment. It shows up in small, simple choices. It’s the moment you decide to stop apologising for needing space. It’s saying no without feeling like you owe an explanation. It’s resting without guilt and finally trusting your own instincts again. Each time you choose yourself, the cracks in that invisible cage get even bigger.
The beautiful thing is that the cage was never locked. You’ve had the key the whole time. You just forgot you had a choice. Freedom doesn’t mean quitting everything or starting over. It’s not about being rebellious or throwing the towel in. It’s about remembering who you are when you’re not trying to meet everyone else’s expectations. It’s about creating space to breathe, to feel, to want, and to live in alignment with what actually matters to you.
For me, it started with awareness. Paying attention to when I said yes out of obligation instead of want. Noticing the stories that played in my head about what I “should” be doing. Questioning why I was doing half of the things that were in my life. Wondering why I was doing things that I didn’t even enjoy! With every layer I peeled back, I started to feel lighter. Life felt less heavy, and I started to explore what made me feel good.
That’s what freedom really is: the moment you stop trying to be someone else just to keep the peace. It’s the inner knowing that comes from the awareness that it’s you who gets to choose every single thing. It’s remembering that you’re not stuck, you’re simply living your belief blueprint. And that blueprint can be replaced.
The invisible cage loses its power the second you decide you’re done living inside it. You don’t need permission. You don’t need a plan. You just need to start listening to that small voice inside that keeps whispering, “There’s more than this.” Because there is, and once you remember that, you’ll never settle for less. Instead, you will focus on what makes you happy and that incredible feeling of freedom.
