The Taoist Three Treasures: Energies of Life
I began attending Tai Chi and Chi Kung, or Qi Gong, classes after responding to a soul calling and the inspiration to do it. I had no idea what the words Tai and Chi meant or what it was. Little did I know it would transform my life forever.
Qualities of Chi
Tai essentially means Grand Ultimate. The word Chi means Energy. Chi is energy, the vital energy of our universe and creation. We practice Tai Chi and Chi Kung to ‘Harness The Internal Strength.’ We work positively in unison with the flow of universal power. Of course, there is more to it than that.
In Taoism, the Three Powers of Heaven govern the flow of chi. Heaven is yang, Earth is yin, and Man is yin and yang. Yang chi flows downwards from Heaven. Yin chi flows upwards from the Earth. As Mankind is between them, the two flows meet and combine.
Jing Chi Shen
The Three Powers of Heaven are within the human body and are a trinity that mirrors the Three Powers. When they enter the body, they become the Three Treasures. Jing is the essence of our physical energy, Chi is the essence of our life energy, and Shen is our spirit. In Taoism, yin and yang affect all the processes at work in the universe. The Three Treasures are the basis of the phenomenon of life.
Three Basic Planes of Existence
The Three Treasures are a gift given to us by the Tao at birth. They reflect the three planes of existence for all living beings on Earth: the physical, the energetic, and the mental. These have always been taught to me by wise teachers as the levels or bodies intrinsic to all beings on Earth.
Balance of the Treasures
The relative strength and balance of The Three Treasures determine our health and longevity. It is the aim of Taoist practice and the practice of Tai Chi and Chi Kung to be strong in all three. To have body, breath, and mind flowing together in natural harmony.
Pause and take a breath
- How balanced do I feel at this moment?
- How smooth is my breathing?
- How peaceful is my mind?
- Do I feel energetic or lifeless?
- How harmonious are my breath, mind, and body?
- Does one of my Three Treasures feel strong?
- Does one of my Three Treasures feel weak?
- What emotions do I feel when I think of them?
Storage of The Three Treasures in the Body
We have many energy centres in the body. The three main energy centres that I will talk about here are known as gates. These centres or gates are elixir fields known as San Tan Tien. I will give you a basic overview of the elixir fields.
Jing is the primordial essence of energy, stored in the lower Tan Tien just below the navel point and physically within our kidneys. We inherit this kidney energy from the universe through our birth mother. The energy depletes as we age. It is associated with our vital energy, our sexual energy, our health, and with how well we respond to and flow with change in our life and in the world. When it is functioning well and in balance, the lower Tan Tien may become like the flow of the ocean. But it also holds our eternal flame of life. The exchange of energy illustrates that the flow of yin and yang is constant, interchangeable, and never stagnant.
When we practice energy work such as Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Yoga, or other powerful energy practices, we replenish our lower Tan Tien with Chi and work to purify our physical Jing.
The middle Tan Tien is located in the solar plexus but is also related to the heart and chest. Physically, it holds the energy of the adrenal glands. The middle Tan Tien relates to our emotional state and emotional strength. The transformation of chi vitality takes place in this space.
The upper Tan Tien, situated in the centre of our head, physically relates to the pituitary and pineal glands. It is where Shen, or spirit, is transformed into a pure light that flows with the vital qualities of the universe. From here, we can connect with a higher power of compassion and wisdom. The higher energy flows back down to the human so that we can hold it within and extend it to the world and the Earth.
How Does This Affect Me?
When I first started to learn about the Three Treasures, I began to understand the way they relate to my body and spiritual journey. I discovered the key is to tune into myself and explore how the energies make me feel.
Pause and take a breath
Bring your mind to your lower Tan Tien, just below your navel point. Stay here for a while and examine this area deeply.
- How strong do I feel?
- How healthy am I?
- How well do I adapt to change?
- Do I feel my physical essence and connection to the Earth?
- Can I feel the vitality flowing upwards?
When you are ready, move to your middle Tan Tien and stay here looking as deeply as you can. You do not have to do this in the same session.
- Do I feel nurtured?
- Do I nurture myself well?
- How balanced do I feel in myself?
- How balanced am I in the world?
- Is my body full of vitality?
- Do I bring vitality into my lifestyle?
- What triggers me?
- Do I generally feel bright and optimistic about life?
- Am I generally enthusiastic about my life?
- How well do I handle my emotions?
- Am I in control of my emotions from moment to moment?
- Do I feel an expansion in my heart and chest?
- Do I feel strong enough to open my heart and feel compassion?
- Do I feel compassion for myself?
- Do I feel compassion for others?
- How easy is it to feel compassion for the world?
- Can I hold all beings in my heart?
When ready, move to your upper Tan Tien in the centre of your head. Again, this does not have to be in the same session.
- How clearly do I see my life and journey?
- Do I see the bigger picture of my life?
- How well do I see the workings and flow of the world?
- Can I see the bigger picture of the world system?
- How clearly do I see the energy and journey of the Earth?
- Do I see the vast workings of the Earth and the many levels?
- How clearly do I see the world and where I fit into it?
- How well do I see the universe?
- Can I see where I fit into the universe?
- How well do I see the flow of life through myself, the world, the Earth, and the universe?
- I have personally found that the answers to the above questions varied at different stages of my life and spiritual journey. Especially so in the early years of my path.
The Spiritual Calling
When we answer the ‘Spiritual Calling,’ we are all drawn to our particular path and practice. Our unique karma and programming attract us to the teachers and leaders who may assist us.
A huge aspect of my path has been to practice and teach energy work. As a Tai Chi and Yoga teacher, I embrace Taoism and I embrace the Vedas and Hinduism. In addition, I have a powerful calling to the Buddhist teachings and practices.
Whatever path you choose, it is vitally important to pay attention to the various aspects and levels of yourself and the way everything connects within, around and through you.
You have a physical body; if you did not, you wouldn’t have been able to turn on the device where you are reading this blog.
You have an energy body; it is apparent when you feel full of energy and enthusiasm or if you feel tired, drained, and flat.
You have an emotional body. It becomes apparent when you feel and react to your circumstances constantly.
You have a mental body. You know this because you spend a lot of energy thinking.
In addition, you have many spiritual layers that are unfolding and expanding in this moment.
All the levels within you are becoming more illuminated as you answer your spiritual calling.
Exercise
- Sit or lie down in a quiet, peaceful place.
- Connect with your breath, breathing more slowly and deliberately than usual.
- Gently scan upwards from your lower Tan Tien below your navel point. To your middle Tan Tien at your solar plexus. Bring your awareness to your heart if you are inspired to connect here.
- Slowly move your awareness to your upper Tan Tien in the centre of your head.
- Gently move your awareness up and down the three Tan Tiens.
- Focus on your breath once more and ask for clarity on what path you should follow.
- Allow the insights and inspiration time to flow into your awareness.
Energy work has proven a great way to balance all my subtle layers and the flow of life within me. When I tune in, I connect to the human world and to the natural order of life.
The layers deep within, beginning with my human body and earth connection, now flow with all the layers of nature. There is a sense of becoming part of the vastness of the universe and creation as they work together.
The Three Treasures of Heaven are awake within us all and are a springboard to expand our consciousness and connect with the higher intelligence of the universe.
Tao produces one.
One produces two.
Two produces three.
Three produces ten thousand things.
