Inner peace comes from deep within, not from outside you. Inner peace is a connection to your higher self, the connection that allows you to let go of the fears that filter your true inner peaceful self.
Tao of Flow
The universe is a vast Oneness, a great unity, a network or tapestry of love and light.
This is not a new perception, but it is more readily embraced by people who live a lifestyle that demands harmony between humanity, nature, and the universe and the wisdom that everything is dependent on everything else as a way of survival.
A tree needs rain to produce its crop. Animals need the tree’s crop for food, and animal droppings fertilize the soil, resulting in the vegetation in the area flourishing. The soil can then hold water for the tree. Therefore, there is no dependence or independence in the universe; there is only interdependence.
The Tapestry of the Tao
The universe is a vast tapestry in which every dimension, star, world, creature, rock, and drop of water is connected by threads of light. The Oneness of all that exists is ‘Tao.’
The threads of the Tao are in constant motion, always adjusting and changing their connection and relationships. The only constant in the Tao is change, but within all this change the threads remain in harmony. The network of the Tao cannot be separated into individual threads, as this would mean the loss of Oneness and the destruction of harmony and flow.
The Tao cannot be divided into you-me, them-us, nature-humanity; there is only Oneness.
The Tao’s principles are cyclical; we see this clearly reflected on earth. Night follows day, death follows life, and seasons follow each other in a never-ending cycle in which all things exist and move. The Tao is a circle within which all things exist and move.
So, it is essential for us to achieve and remain in harmony with the constant flow of change in the Tao.
You Are a Mini Tao
The Tao is like a vast ocean composed of the waters of chi, life force energy. Chi currents flow through this ocean, causing waves and whirlpools. Each of us is like a fish swimming in the great ocean.
The human body is like a small version of the Tao. It is a totality, a unity where all the parts are connected and flow together. If all the parts of our body co-operate with one another, our body is healthy. If one part of the body goes its own separate way, it conflicts with the other body parts. The interdependence of our mini Tao is disrupted, and this causes the wholeness of the body to fragment. We become sick.
In our universe, the cycle of the Tao divides into Yin the feminine and Yang the masculine. These are vital energies that flow like two great rivers. The yin is non-aggressive, yielding, and receptive. The yang is aggressive and outgoing. Yin and yang combine to form everything; a different combination produces a different object, such as a tree, a human, a dolphin, and so forth. When the two energies separate, the object disappears back into the Tao.
Yin and Yang
As humans, some of us are predominantly yin, non-aggressive, and some yang, aggressive, competitive, etc. The modern human world is more yang; we seek answers to life within our rational minds. We rely on science and technology to gather information and attempt to adapt the environment to suit us.
While other creatures in our world are at one with nature and live in harmony with their surroundings, we have chosen to dedicate our lives to rational thought. However, rationality was never meant to be our only guide through life. The function of the rational mind was meant to be a problem solver rather than a guide for life.
When a problem arises, the mind separates into its various components and seeks to find the part that needs fixing and solve the problem. When it discovers the cause, the problem can be dealt with.
If we choose to approach life from an exclusively rational point of view, our mind is clouded and cannot see the bigger picture. It is unable to see the Oneness of the Tao.
A Separate Mind is a Loss of Peace
Because we often approach life with a rational mind, we see ourselves as separate from nature. This leads to the misconception that we can harm nature without hurting ourselves. We see this all the time around the world.
We see ourselves as separate from each other by nationality, age, race, religion, politics, wealth, and so on. We categorize everything and everyone.
This separation has resulted in living in isolation and loneliness. As a race, we have lost our sense of Oneness with nature and with each other. The mind has created a whole new identity for this separation. This separation is, of course, the ego.
We have all achieved a state of inner peace at some point. Sometimes for a moment or an hour or two.
Finding our Tao of inner peace is learning to create that feeling without being dependent on things turning out a certain way. It is about not needing other people to respond to us in a specific way.
Pause and take a breath
- Consider inner peace for a moment.
- What is my idea of Inner Peace?
- Do I have a picture in my mind of inner peace?
- What does my inner peace feel like?
Finding Inner Peace
We must find the inner peace of our hearts, the yin energy. Then extend it so that it touches and affects everything in the outer world around us.
Our bodies are receptacles of many thoughts and energies around us that are not peaceful. If you bring your body to a state of peace and rest, you can teach your mind that feeling and learn to create it.
Peace is more than just a feeling of relaxation in the body; it is a frequency, a vibration. Your body is a receiver and transmitter of many vibrations, peace being one of them.
You can help your body with relaxation or calming movement. Or you can use mental relaxation and allow it to flow into your body.
As a Tai Chi and Chi Kung practitioner and teacher, I see and feel that the continuous movement of the Tao follows certain principles. The movements of Tai Chi are a reflection of the movements of the Tao. As we practice our Form, Tai Chi practitioners flow harmoniously and become One with the Tao. The distinction between mind, body, and soul dissolves. We do not have a body; we do not have an energetic system or chakra system. We simply dance in the light. Consciousness flows evenly through the body so that the entire being becomes pure awareness. Yin and Yang flow in unison, and the mind comes into balance of both living at one with nature and using the rational mind to solve problems when needed. From here, inner peace is expressed through all life.
Inner Peace is Who You Are
Creating inner peace means becoming inner peace. It means connecting to the yin of your heart and bringing this into balance with your rational yang mind.
Creating your inner peace means drawing from the higher levels and learning to open your heart.
Rather than reacting to people and incidents and waiting for others or situations and events to line up in a certain way, you become the centre of light and radiate your soul’s presence of love outwards.
It means you do not focus or attach on an emotional level to things that are happening around and outside of you.
After planning an event or anticipating a certain result, you are accepting of an outcome, even if it is not what you expected or wanted.
We know it is easier to be open and loving when people around us are loving. The challenge is to be loving when those around you are feeling closed, afraid, or negative and demonstrate this with their attitude and behaviour.
Pause and take a breath
- I know who I am.
- I let things flow around me.
- I am in a state of peace.
- My heart stays open, no matter what anyone does.
- My heart stays open, no matter what happens.
- I choose to feel peaceful.
- I extend my inner peace to touch my life and outer world.
- Inner Peace is stepping aside from the rational mind, at least for a while, to reenter the flow of the Tao.
Letting Go of Attachments
Anything we have an attachment to or must have a certain way—any belief or inflexible concept we have—is an area that threatens our inner peace.
We have many attachments: fears of being hurt or rejected, abandonment, fear we cannot make it in the world, unworthiness, inadequacy, failure, fear of sickness, and so on.
Inner peace is the willingness to be heart-centred and let go of fear without having anything to defend. It is a willingness to be vulnerable without fear.
Inner peace is being willing and having the ability to shine as our truth, knowing we will be all right.
Pause and take a breath
- I let go of self-criticism.
- I let go of self-doubt.
- I listen to the voice within.
- I open to my deep inner love and light.
- I choose to remain calm and centred.
- I contemplate inner peace.
- I acknowledge all moments of inner peace.
- I use every experience to respond with inner peace.
Decide to Affect the World Around You with Peace
Inner peace heals. It is the connection to your higher spiritual self. It is the doorway to experience and live in the higher levels of energy.
The rational yang mind can be deceiving, but the yin feeling in your heart is your truth.
If you find a situation in life challenging, focus on your inner peace and hold it up to the love and light of the Tao.
Pause and take a breath
- I open my heart.
- I am willing to set myself free.
- I am open to the inner answers and messages.
- The universe guides me.
- I create the reflection of my soul’s light in the outer world.
Feeling Inner Peace
Remember three times when you felt inner peace. Experience the feelings and make notes about them.
Think of three things that take away your inner peaceful feelings. Then acknowledge they are from a part of you that does not feel peaceful.
- I identify with and connect with my bright, strong inner self.
- My strong inner self shines love and light into the small, fearful part of me.
- I surrender my fear to the light.
- I forgive people outside me.
- I forgive myself.
- I shine with inner peace.
- The world around me reflects my inner peace.
To find inner peace is to connect to our deep inner self. It is the union of mind and nature and the return journey to Oneness with all things. Inner peace is once again being one with the Tao.
