Meet Kathleen S. McPhillips, Body, Mind, Spirit, Life Master Teacher. In the soon-to-be available book, The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools for Grief, Loss, and Transition. Kathleen shares her story of recognizing the different faces of grief throughout her experiences with injury, illness, and aging. She also shares how a life-changing injury and a profound sense of loss were a sacred doorway just waiting to be opened.

The Wellness Universe (WU): Hello Kathleen, please tell us about yourself and what inspired you to write your chapter in the book The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools For Navigating Loss, Grief and Transition.

Kathleen S. McPhillips (KSM): I’ve been a teacher of Yoga and life for decades. When I was asked to be a co-author in this book on grief, I had to take a long look at my life and remember how this life-changing injury that devastated me turned into one of my greatest blessings, because out of desperation, it led me to Yoga.

WU: What tool do you share in this book, and what can we expect to experience as a result of using this tool?

KSM: Self Awareness through Journaling. Self-awareness is key to recognizing how I feel and understanding that grief has many different faces. Instead of labeling myself depressed, I discovered through journaling that I was not only sad about this devastating injury, but I was grieving who I once was.

Journaling has been the most cathartic and healing thing I’ve ever done for myself. It allows my true emotions to pour through my pen onto paper, and then I can read it, feel it, and understand myself better. This is a practice I’ve been doing for decades, but especially when I’m processing the moments in life that need healing and my attention.

Your spiritual practice is the best companion for navigating life, especially the overwhelming, dramatic, and traumatic events that can easily define us, if we let it. Knowing that there is something greater than yourself, knowing that you have angels, guides, and the Divine Presence within and in your life, is the greatest tool and gift of all.

WU: What was the Sacred Doorway for you, and what did you discover?

KSM: The sacred doorway was the journey inward to discover my true, authentic feelings and myself. The only way to truly heal is to go within, exploring feelings, emotions, pain, suffering, and especially grief. There is nothing to fear looking within; it’s an extraordinary opportunity to discover the Divine Presence within you. This is your infinite, glorious Soul.

This journey has been one of profound awakenings that continue to support me every moment of my life. It has opened my heart to the greatest love, the love of our Creator/God, and to know that we are all One, that we are not separate from one another. The very essence of humanity is one of pure Love. Love that is God.
