In the #1 international bestselling book The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools for Navigating Loss, Grief & Transition, Maria shares how to come home to yourself after the world makes you forget your light.
The Wellness Universe (WU): Hello Maria, please tell us about the tool you share in the book The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools for Navigating Loss, Grief & Transition
Maria Feider (MF): The tool that I share is the practice of mirror work. This is a gentle practice of looking at yourself in the mirror and being present with all that you see. As you witness every expression of who you are, you allow healing of the past to unfold. By acknowledging the parts of yourself that are hard to look at, you allow yourself the experience of being seen and accepted.
Through self-forgiveness and self-acceptance, you can begin to transmute the inner critic and see yourself for who you truly are. Giving yourself the gift of full presence allows a space to open for your true reflection to shine through. The light that you are can be seen beyond the mask that you carry of all of your pain.
By using this tool, you can expect to become closer to your truth. As your ego attempts to keep you safe by keeping you small, insecure, or reminiscing over past mistakes, you give those parts of you room to breathe and be acknowledged. When we expel and disapprove of our pain, it continues to be suppressed and held inward. Through giving it a spotlight, it begins to feel heard and has permission to dissipate.
As you allow yourself to feel and process your emotions, you can see that the bright being that you’ve always been has been waiting to be remembered. Your true essence is pure love. It’s just something that we forget as we grow up. The world gives us many reasons to believe we’re less than love, yet that can’t possibly be true. Every experience of separation from your light is an opportunity to remember that which you are.
WU: Based on your chapter, Maria, how can we be sure of our light when we feel lost in the dark??
MF: Darkness is only the absence of light. There isn’t really separation as everything is one, yet there are contrasting experiences. I use the word “darkness” to represent sadness and pain, but please don’t mistake my words, as I recognize that there is a time and a space to honor the dark as well. My understanding is that every single one of us is a part of the Source. Every drop is a part of the ocean, and at the same time, a drop of the ocean is not separate from the entirety of the sea.
When we are drowning in the darkness (I’ll keep my ocean analogy alive here), we must recognize that we are a drop in the ocean.
Staying afloat is our natural state of being that we’ve come to forget. The light that we are is simply our nature. Our being. The essence of who we are.
Over time, the life experiences that shape us create the illusion of fragmentation, where we begin to believe that we’re separate from God. This can’t ever be true, because all is one.
When we are clouded by pain, trauma, grief, or the shame of our mistakes, we often identify with the shadows as being our identity. Yet, beyond the human expressions of our forms, love remains at the core.
So next time you feel separate from love, tap into your heart and feel into the truth that you’ve known all along. This you can be certain of. Love is who you are. Connect
