“What will people think?”
You ever hear an internal voice asking that before you’ve even finished forming your own thought? It’s a quiet, persistent hum of unease experienced by most people, I think.
Maybe it’s the career your parents envisioned for you, the relationship your friends expected you to be in, or the way you’re “supposed” to spend your weekends. Living according to others’ expectations can feel safe—it’s a well-worn path, to be sure—and approval is the currency that keeps the walkway smooth. But the cost of engaging in that kind of transaction is often your own soul. The challenge is that whenever you choose to live your own life, you risk disappointing people who had a different plan for you. And that’s a real, visceral fear.

Remember, when you choose to live your own life, you gain more than you lose. You lose the false approval of those who never really knew you, but you gain clarity, energy, and a quiet joy that comes from being at home in your own skin. You gain the freedom to disappoint others without being destroyed by it. And you give the people around you a chance to meet the real you – the one who carves bowls, or writes poetry, or dances in the kitchen. That’s a gift worth giving. So go ahead. Say yes to yourself. Love them, bless them, and let them deal with their own disappointment. You have a life to live.
