Lets talk about pelvic health which according to Olivia de Maigret, Paris-trained osteopath and Co-Founder of Four Mamas, is key to our wellbeing.
In fact, Olivia says your pelvis is almost your body’s foundation- and when it’s not happy, nothing works quite right, including bladder issues, pain, pressure, even problems in your sexual wellness. In fact, up to 1 in 4 women deal with some kind of pelvic floor disorder.
So, what is the pelvic floor?
Imagine a little muscular hammock stretching across the bottom of your pelvis, made up of 26 muscles that connect from your pubic bone to your tailbone, that’s your pelvic floor. It keeps your organs in place, helps control your bladder and bowels, and plays a huge role if you ever give birth. These muscles can be strong, weak, too tight, too loose and any imbalance can cause all sorts of issues.
And guess what? Women are especially prone to pelvic health challenges as the female body has a narrower pelvis and life events such as pregnancy, childbirth, and hormonal shifts can really shake things up.
Olivia tells me that the pelvis for a woman is what a healthy microbiome is for glowing skin. It’s the base, the center, the quiet powerhouse behind everything from fertility to digestion.
Modern life isn’t helping as we tend to sit all day- at your desk before moving sitting on the tube and then we flop onto the sofa – our pelvis does not like this as sitting stiffens up your pelvis and reduces mobility, which is bad for your posture, digestion and fertility.
There are lots of things that you can do to turn things around.
Olivia has shared her go-to tips for a healthier pelvis:
- Move Your Hips
Dancing, walking, stretching all help get your pelvis more flexible as well as keeping blood flowing to those tissues. Dancing is especially positive for the pelvis as it relaxes the entire system- it’s fun, free, and keeps the pelvic area supple. It’s also a great mood booster.
- Don’t Ignore your mind
Pelvic health isn’t just physical. Emotional stress and conditions like endometriosis or fibroids can create imbalances that show up physically. Olivia believes prepping for fertility or pregnancy is as much about mental strength as it is about physical.
- Know Your Floor
A strong pelvic floor doesn’t mean tight. It’s about flexibility and control. A lot of women unknowingly push down instead of contracting properly which can lead to pain or leakage. Learning how to actually use those muscles is a game changer.
- Stop Holding It In
Forget the myth that holding your pee strengthens your pelvic floor. It doesn’t. In fact, it can cause tension and other problems. Your pelvic floor should contract and relax naturally- not stay clenched like a fist all day.
Your pelvis is not just some behind-the-scenes body part. It’s your foundation, your core, and holds so much of your health together. From better posture and digestion to pain relief and even improved intimacy, taking care of your pelvic floor can change the way you feel every single day. With a little awareness and a few simple habits- like moving your hips, checking in with your mental health, and learning how to really use those deep core muscles, you can reconnect with your body in a powerful way.
