Good Morning, Grief—Breathing in the Blessings

Morning light slips through the blinds, landing softly across the blanket at the foot of my bed. I wake slowly, feeling the familiar ache before my eyes fully open. “Good morning, grief,” I whisper into the quiet room, acknowledging my companion—a friend and partner for decades.

I struggle to lift my arms, move my jaw, fingers, and legs, waiting for my joints to loosen enough to respond. Unable yet to open my eyes, I reach blindly. My braces patiently wait. The sound of ripping Velcro echoes in the stillness as I open them and guide my legs inside. Pumpkin pads over, pressing her furry, warm head against my hand. I pat her gently, grateful for her steady presence.

I pause, acknowledging grief and pain, while breathing in the blessings, singing my sacred word, and filling my heart with gratitude. “Thank you, God, for this new day to serve you.”

Each day I navigate permanent somatic grief—a nonnegotiable cellular reflex. Just as the knee jerks when tapped with a medical hammer, my body has an automatic “grief reflex” to chronic pain, completely independent of my emotional state or attitude. Yet joy threads itself through this routine, waltzing in harmony with grief. I find joy in Pumpkin’s soft nudge, the sunlight warming the blanket, my husband sleeping near me, the uplifting framed family memories throughout the room, and my surrender to divine will. All bring me joy and courage to begin again.

So many of us carry grief no one sees, tucked behind our smiles, our responsibilities, and the brave faces we offer the world.

Unspoken Grief Statistics

Across cultures and generations, grief often lives quietly inside us.

Weathering the Storm with Love

Lagos, Nigeria

Amina steps onto the stack of old car tires outside her home; the rubber feels warm beneath her bare feet. The street has become a shallow river again, carrying plastic bottles, palm fronds, and the oily sheen of diesel. Children splash through the water as if it were a game, their laughter rising above the hum of generators.

Inside, the floor is slick with murky floodwater. Amina lifts her skirt and moves across the wooden planks she and her sons nailed together last season. They wobble slightly, but they keep her feet dry. A single‑burner kerosene stove sits on an overturned crate, raised high enough to keep the flame away from the water. She crouches beside it, stirring a pot of rice, steam rising into the humid air.

The walls smell of damp wood and mildew. Amina’s sewing machine, perched on bricks, leans slightly to one side. She adjusts it with a practiced hand.

Amina pauses when she hears the water slap against the doorway—a sound she knows too well. Last year’s flood took her furniture, her photographs, and the small courtyard where her children once played. Yet she and her sons have learned to weave joy into their days, singing while they cook, clapping rhythms as they work, and finding small moments of laughter even as the storms return.

Her grief lives in these small, steady movements, rebuilding her defenses every year, knowing the water will return. Her joy lives in the blessings that remain: the bright laughter of her children as they sing, clap, and play inside while weathering the storm.

Natural Disaster Grief Statistics

• 1 in 3 disaster survivors develop trauma within the first year.
• Over 50% of people who lose homes report long‑term grief tied to identity and belonging.
• Up to 40% of households experience ongoing emotional distress after flooding.
• Home loss is one of the strongest predictors of prolonged grief.

Haruto pedals slowly along the Kamo River, the bicycle tires whispering over gravel. Cherry blossoms drift down like pale pink snow, catching in his hair and on the sleeves of his uniform. He stops at a bench and pulls out his father’s sketchbook, the pages soft from years of use. A bold brushstroke sweeps across one page, a line his father once painted with a laugh that filled their small apartment.

Now that laugh is rare.

At home, his father sits at the low kitchen table, staring at a cup of tea he doesn’t remember making. The room smells faintly of miso and old wood. Haruto watches from the doorway as his father taps the table in a rhythm that used to accompany stories—stories he can no longer tell.

“Otōsan,” Haruto says softly.

His father lifts his head, his eyes searching his face.

Some days, recognition flickers.

Some days it doesn’t.

Haruto moves quietly around the house, labeling drawers, guiding his father’s hand to the right teacup, picking up misplaced objects. He bows politely when neighbors ask how things are going, answering with the practiced phrase: “Daijōbu desu,” meaning everything is fine.

At night, Haruto returns to the river path. The falling blossoms comfort him as he grieves. He opens his father’s sketchbook, tracing each line, then closing his eyes in gratitude for the happy memories they once shared. Long‑lasting gifts of love fill his heart.

Haruto’s grief is in the pauses—the long, drifting spaces when his father’s mind wanders. But his gratitude and joy are in the precious memories he will always carry in his heart.

Dementia and Ambiguous Loss Statistics

• 70% of caregivers experience ambiguous or anticipatory grief.

Carving Out a New Life

Midwest, USA

Marcus stands in Lilly’s old bedroom, the late‑afternoon light falling across the lavender walls. Her drawings still hang in mismatched frames—a crooked paper sun, a stick‑figure family, a watercolor cat with enormous eyes. Marcus sits on the edge of her small bed, running his thumb along the wooden headboard where she once taped her dance recital photos.

The room smells faintly of the lavender spray she loved, though she hasn’t lived here in two years, not since Sharon moved her and Lilly out east after the divorce.

“Daddy, let’s make a puppet,” she used to say.

Marcus steps into the workshop, the place where those puppets came to life. Sawdust clings to the floorboards. A single shaft of light cuts across the workbench, illuminating the small heart Lilly carved into the seat of his stool. He traces the grooves with his fingertips, feeling the uneven ridges she made with her beginner’s knife.

The stool wobbles slightly when he sits, as if remembering her weight.

He doesn’t talk about the divorce—not with his students, not with the other instructors, not with his mother, who keeps insisting he’ll “bounce back.” Instead, he lingers in the truck after class, hands resting on the steering wheel, breath slow and heavy, watching the sky fade from lavender to blue.

Before he turns the key in the ignition, Marcus breathes deeply, remembering feelings of grief from the empty bedroom, the wooden stool, and his broken heart. He cries alone, releasing what he can, then opens his heart to gratitude. Marcus begins carving out a new life of joy and love, volunteering in his community, wood-crafting alone or with others, teaching his students, visiting his mother, and relaxing with friends.

Divorce and Identity Loss Statistics

Grief softens when it is witnessed. Healing begins when we allow ourselves to be held: by breath, by movement, by creativity, by community, by compassion.

• Nature walks: Grounding in fresh air and beauty

• Alternative therapies: Massage, acupuncture, or energy work
• Private counseling or coaching: One‑on‑one support

Joy Rises in the Reshaping

Grief touches every corner of the world from the flooded streets in Nigeria, to the drifting memories in Japan, to a tear‑filled car in the Midwest, and to a painful daily awakening on the Pacific Coast. But here is the truth we all share:

Grief doesn’t end our story. It reshapes it. And joy rises in the reshaping.

Amina’s joy lies in her creative, resilient, loving efforts to rebuild and maintain her home—for her community, her children, and herself. Haruto’s joy is not about restoring the past, but about honoring what remains. He attends private counseling sessions to express and manage his grief. Marcus’s joy begins when he allows himself to imagine a brighter future surrounded by those who respect, support, and believe in him. He is building his community and crafting his future. And my joy is received and maintained through the daily disciplined efforts of conscious surrender to a higher power.

Amina is rebuilding.

Marcus is rediscovering.
And I am celebrating—every day.
